VMWare configured for Bridged, VMWare Tools installed. Mistake I made was booting the first time without checking that VMWare was set to Bridged and not NAT.
ifconfig -a plumb
found a pcn0 device and then
ifconfig pcn0 up
ifconfig pcn0 dhcp
